Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.
Colossians 4:6
The Bible has a lot to say about our words, what they are and how we use them. Words have the power of life or death. ( Proverbs 18:21) None of us are above the temptation to use our words to vent, to fuss, to have a fit of rage, to avenge ourselves or plead our cause. When I read Colossians 4:6 a light bulb came on in my head! It's telling me that no matter who I am talking to the Holy Spirit needs to be in control. My words need to be surrendered to Him, because I will make a big mess even with good intentions! Whether I am talking to my husband, children, friends, neighbors, or the grocery store clerk, the Holy Spirit will help us respond to each person. Verse 5 of that scripture says to be wise and make the most of every opportunity, take EVERY opportunity to show Jesus. We are responsible for our words and how they affect people and we will be held accountable. (Matthew 12:36) No matter what the situation is, or what the topic of conversation is, the only words that should come out of our mouths are words that will encourage and give grace to the hearer. (Ephesians 4:29)
The people of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.”
“Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him.
Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’”
2Kings 2:19-21
Lord, it's my prayer that my speech will always be seasoned with salt so that it will never cause death and will always be productive!
